Infertility Acronyms and Slang


BCP – Birth control pills

Beta – Blood pregnancy test your doctor does

BFN – Big fat negative (pregnancy test)

BFP – Big fat positive (pregnancy test)

Clomid – a drug taken orally to induce ovulation

DE – Donor eggs

DOR – Diminished ovarian reserve

DS – Donor sperm

ER – Egg retrieval

ET – Embryo transfer

FSH – Follicle stimulating hormone (controls menstrual cycles and production of eggs)

HCG – Human chorionic gonadotropin (measured in the beta pregnancy test. You want this # to double every 48 hours)

HPT – Home pregnancy test

ICSI – Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (injecting a sperm directly into an egg)

IF – Infertility abbreviation

IUI – Intrauterine insemination

IVF – In vitro fertilization

MC – Miscarriage

MFI – Male factor infertility (fertility issues due to the male s

MMC – Missed miscarriage

OHSS – Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (if your ovaries get overstimulated during stims, you may get this)

POAS – Pee on a stick (taking a pregnancy test at home)

PGD – Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (tests an embryo’s chromosomes so see which embryos could make a viable pregnancy)

RE – Reproductive endocrinologist (the doctor you see for fertility treatments)

SA – Semen analysis

TTC – Trying to conceive

TWW – Two week wait (the period of time you wait after embryo transfer and taking a pregnancy test)


Frosties – Frozen embryos, embryos on ice for future use

Stims – The medications you take to stimulate ovarian growth and maturity during an IVF cycle

Trigger – The shot you give yourself to trigger ovulation about 36 hours before egg retrieval
