So I’m sure you may have heard by now, but if not, sometime last week Dolce & Gabbana said some pretty disgusting, cruel, shocking, and untrue things about IVF babies and the families that use IVF, sperm donation, egg donation, embryo adoption, artificial insemination, adoption, or surrogacy to grow their families. Their remarks caused a huge uproar from the TTC (trying to conceive) community, and from most of the population in general who have a lick of common sense anyway and who, oh yea, live in the 21st century.
Dolce and Gabbana said (source):
“We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one. … No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: Life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed.”
“You are born to a mother and a father — or at least that’s how it should be,” Dolce said. “I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog…psychiatrists are not ready to confront the effects of this experimentation.”
Dolce added that procreation “must be an act of love“, saying: “You are born to a mother and a father – or at least that’s how it should be.
How is stabbing yourself daily with hormone injections, bleeding your savings dry, submitting to painful and embarrassing diagnostic tests, having surgeries to fix any problems, experiencing endless amounts of fear, doubt, and being a prisoner of hope for years at a time NOT an act of love? OH MY GOD YOU IGNORANT FUCKING BASTARDS.
If anything, couples going through IVF, gay or straight, are pushing themselves to the limits for the family of their dreams and if ANYTHING this proves their love and commitment. Doesn’t going through those things prove that infertile or gay couples would do just about anything for their baby? That sounds like deep love to me.
And how can a gay couple even say this about other gay couples who choose to use reproductive assistance or adoption? “Born to a mother and a father?” Get with the times D&G!
Elton John swung back with this beautiful remark on instagram (source):
“How dare you refer to my beautiful children as “synthetic”. And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana”
So ever since Elton John’s boycott hashtag, lots of people have been throwing out their D&G perfumes and clothing and posting pics on instagram of them in the trash.
I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but D&G’s remarks are completely insensitive and insane. There are plenty of people who just want to be parents, who didn’t chose the infertility diagnosis, who didn’t choose who they fell in love with, and they have every right to grow their family as the next person and not be judged for their personal choices.
There’s NOTHING synthetic about me and Brian’s embryo that we made. It’s ours, it’s human, we fought for it, it was made with love. It may have been made in a non-traditional way, but it’s not synthetic!
Yes, I can choose to ignore what they said and move on, but I don’t want to. Infertility has affected my life, as well as millions of other couples in the world, and I find their comments to be ignorant and hurtful, so I feel very defensive on this matter. And since we’re all entitled to our own opinions, here’s mine: I’m glad as hell that these two dick heads won’t be having any children of their own since they so clearly don’t believe in gay adoption or using reproductive technologies.
